DS4Windows is a third-party software that renders the DualShock 4 (DS4) controller compatible with PCs. In other words, the software helps if you want the freedom to use the DualShock 4 (DS4) controller to play Xbox games on your Windows machine. While you can go the dongle or Bluetooth adapter route, DS4Windows probably offers the most seamless gaming experience.
Xbox games cannot be played on a Windows computer since the Xbox 360 controller doesn’t support PCs. Sony’s Dual Shock 4 tries to bridge this gap by emulating the Xbox 360 controller, but it needs something like DS4 Windows to work underneath. With the controller and program, almost all Xbox games become accessible on your computer.
Yes, DS4 Windows is a free program. You can download it from the official DS4 Windows website as a zip file. However, the DS4 controller is not free. You must shell out around $60 for the device. This makes DS4 Windows program free technically, but it isn't practically as the program is nothing without the DS4 controller.
DS4 Windows constantly gets updated, with newer versions coming almost every month. With every new version, the program adds more features and functionality and fixes the bugs and other nagging issues faced by users. The latest version is v1.4.52. This version adds support for the new DS4 controller, fixes stick sensitivity issues, and brings updates to translations in a few languages such as Polish and German.
To use the software program, you would need certain software and hardware tools. Microsoft .NET 4.5 (or later) to unzip drivers and macro functioning; DS4 driver; Microsoft 360 driver; Sony DualShock 4 controller; and micro USB cable.
To get rolling, you must download and install DS4Windows’ latest version, which would detect the pre-requisites and install the ones that are not there. Post that, plug the controller in (using a USB cable) and allow Windows some time to detect the USB input, and then run the program. The controller should now be detected.
The program’s user interface is simple and minimalistic so that users can learn the UI and get on with getting the controller ready. Upon launching the program, you would go through the initial setup process, wherein you would be introduced to the default profile.
The profile system basically houses different profiles. With multiple profiles, you can easily and quickly swap via different controller settings. You could set the light bar to the color of your choice, controls for specific games, etc. By the way, you can swap profiles by just swiping your two fingers over the touchpad.
‘Automatic profiles’ basically let you switch profiles automatically, eliminating the need for manual switching. You can set different profiles for specific programs and the profile switch would happen as soon as you launch the particular profile.
DS4Windows has sufficient room for customizations. For a fresh profile, you can work on the axis tuning, button mappings, and also alter LED colors. You can also fiddle with the sensitivity of the analog stick, making the LED glow red or cycle via the rainbow. You can make the track pad work like a mouse (not the best mouse ever, but it’s workable).
